Suzuki Auto South Africa has added a Special Edition model to its line-up of Swift compact hatchback models. The new Swift SE benefits from an array of exterior and interior embellishments, some drawn from the flagship Swift Sport.
The main styling features of the new Swift SE are the roof spoiler, together with cylinder-type rear tail light clusters. Both additions are reminiscent of the recently launched Swift Sport. In addition, the SE is fitted with exclusive 16-inch alloy wheels.
Further distinguishing features that set the Special Edition model apart from the other Swift models in the range include silver-hued door handles, together with front fog lights, which have been neatly integrated into the front bumper.
The SE’s exterior features are linked to an array of interior updates. Top of the list is an integrated CD receiver with MP3 playback capability and a USB port capable of accepting mobile storage devices such as flash drives. The thick-rimmed steering wheel is trimmed in leather with silver stitching, and features satellite controls for the audio system.
The sculpted sports seats are also new, and not only offer enhanced comfort and support, but are also upholstered in a distinctive silver fabric. The instrument panel’s appearance is enhanced by the addition of fine chrome garnishes.
A PROVEN PACKAGE
The Swift SE is expected to further boost the popularity of the latest-generation Suzuki Swift. Monthly sales have averaged approximately 135 units since the range was launched in April 2011, with total sales already topping 6 000 units.
The new SE version of the Swift continues to offer the same winning combination of technical excellence, agile dynamics, high comfort levels, and tactile quality.
In design terms, the unique wrap-around effect of the car’s glass area, coupled to a sharply raked windscreen, a wide body and prominent headlight and tail light clusters, creates a head-turning presence. Clever packaging optimises interior space and comfort.
The Swift SE is powered by the same, highly efficient K14B four-cylinder engine that is employed in all models in the range, with the exception of the more powerful Sport version.
The new-generation unit is one of the most fuel efficient naturally-aspirated engines in its class, with a combined cycle fuel consumption of just 5,5 l/100 km and a low CO2 emissions figure of 132 g/km.
Maximum power output is rated at 70 kW, achieved at 6 000 r/min, while the torque peak of 130 Nm is reached at 4 000 r/min. Technical highlights include optimised variable intake valve timing, numerous friction reduction measures, and advanced electronic throttle control.
The SE is offered with a choice of a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic gearbox. Both transmissions have been optimised to best suit the engine’s output characteristics.
The manual version of the Swift SE is capable of accelerating from standstill to 100 km/h in 10,9 sec, and the auto version in 12,3 sec, with top speeds of 170 km/h and 165 km/h respectively.
The Swift SE combines those straight-line figures with superb road manners, thanks to its rigid but lightweight body. A wide front and rear track, a relatively long wheelbase, and short front and rear overhangs all result in confident handling.
The steering features a variable gear ratio design that reduces steering effort at low speeds, but improves response at higher velocities.
The new Suzuki Swift SE models are priced as follows:
Swift 1.4 SE Manual R169 900
Swift 1.4 SE Automatic R184 900
Prices include a standard three-year/100 000 km warranty, as well as a four-year/60 000 km service plan.
